Forgiveness, as the opening catechismic questions indicate, appears sacramentally as reconciliation, and it is understood to occur between persons as well as between human and divine. This chapter argues that forgiveness alters the relational temporality of forgiven and forgiver while illuminating the time of the promise, to which forgiveness is sacramentally linked. Here the chapter follows Elliot Wolfson to claim that forgiveness is given as always already promised. The discussion considers the transformative effects of forgiveness on the structure of the temporality psychoanalytically using theories of trauma, as well as considering the issue theologically.
