This introductory chapter sets out the purpose of the book, which is to discuss the meaning of Talmud. Talmud (without the the) is an intellectual project, and it returns that project to “ the” Talmud, that is, to the Talmud as either a traditional source or a historical object. The argument presented in this book consists of three parts. Part one introduces the question: What is Talmud? Part two explores the written work of R. I. Canpanton. Part three takes Canpanton's intellectual art of Talmud. This book addresses the broader realms of religious studies and philosophy, both early-modern philosophy and contemporary Continental philosophy.

Keywords:   Talmud, Rabbi Izhak Canpanton, intellectual art, religious studies, Jewish studies, Jewish thought, philosophy, Talmudic interpretation
