Living on the Edge: The Human Person as “Frontier Being” and Microcosm
This chapter proposes a creative retrieval of an interconnected pair of ancient ideas of what it means to be a human being and have a place in the cosmos. The first of this pair of ideas is that of the human person as a “frontier being,” living on the edge, on the frontier, between matter and spirit, time, and eternity. The second of this pair of ideas is that of the human person as “microcosm,” or small cosmos, the cosmos in miniature.
Keywords: human being, cosmos, microcosm, frontier being, matter–spirit relationship, eternity
