Is God Diminished If We Abscond?
Is God Diminished If We Abscond?
This chapter examines the works of Richard Kearney, looking closely at the interpretation of the fourth reduction. It asks whether it is possible for anyone to connect with the God Who May Be without paying attention to the tapping on the wall from the other side. The discussion suggests that the fourth reduction can be interpreted through four descents in the kenosis of God. The first, “transcendental”, reduction is situating God as above and beyond anything. The second, “ontological”, reduction could be interpreted as creation of the world. The third, “dosological”, reduction is the kenosis of the Son. In the fourth, or “prosopic”, reduction becomes the further kenosis of the Trinitarian God in and through the “impersonatization” of the Holy Spirit. The chapter concludes that the fourth reduction of God is the fourth person of the Trinity: people as recapitulated into the body of Christ.
