(p.47) Chapter 3 Forms of Divine Disclosure
Believing Scholars

David Tracy

Fordham University Press

This chapter first introduces the three great separations of modern Western culture: the separation of feeling and thought; the separation of form and content; and the separation of theory and practice. The discussion focuses on the distinction between form and content, the least reflected upon of the three separations in modern thought. The chapter holds that this distinction was crucial in the reflection of all the ancients, even if casually set aside by so many modern theologians and philosophers. It looks into the two most basic religious forms in the Bible: prophetic and meditative (wisdom) forms. It argues that from these two forms and their dialectic emerge the fuller spectrum of past, present, and likely future forms of Christian theology.

Keywords:   great separations, feeling and thought, form and content, theory and practice, prophetic form, meditative form
