The Poor and the Third Millennium

(p.36) Chapter 2 The Poor and the Third Millennium
Believing Scholars

Gustavo GutiÉrrez

Fordham University Press

This chapter presents a contribution of the Latin American church experience and its reflection in these last years, as expressed in the phrase, the "preferential option for the poor". This concept puts a great emphasis "on the church preferential option for the poor and the outcast". The chapter reflects on preferential option for the poor, as expressing a very important and old biblical concern. The preferential option for the poor arises from the Bible in different ways during the history of Christianity. The discussion analyzes each word, "poor", " preference", and "option". The chapter argues that people are challenged today to find the face of Jesus Christ in the face of the poor.
