This chapter introduces an agenda for an emerging area of scholarship in the field of religious studies: the philosophy of religion and dance. It also provides an outline of the topics covered in the book. The book aims to unsettle the perception that dance is marginal to the practice and to the study of religions. It provides the theoretical resources needed to recognize why and how a given instance of dance is significant for what is perceived as religion. Towards developing a phenomenology of religion and dance, this book undertakes two tasks. The first, occupying Part 1, discusses the reasons why scholars intent on studying religion have failed to take adequate account of dance. The second task, covering Part 2, documents an approach to religious studies in which theology and theory coexist in a generative tension.
