In melancholy, isn’t there the attraction of a deadly gentleness? Anxiety pervades space and makes recognition impossible. Anguish is a death threat precisely when we should accept it as part of being mortal. Gentleness sometimes informs the decision to consent to the worst: to mourning, for example.
