(p.78) Listening
Power of Gentleness

Anne Dufourmantelle

, Katherine Payne, Vincent Sallé
Fordham University Press

Gentleness participates in a gesture that invites the other. What gives rise to listening is the possibility of an emotion complicit in connecting with what the other is not aware of in himself. The psychoanalyst resists the complaint invading the space and the body of the other. The psychoanalyst hears this lack of gentleness and makes a passage in his listening within which the patient can breach boundaries. The power of listening is a suspended realization that unfolds between the psychoanalyst and the patient.
