The symbolic force of gentleness is a power. Gandhi represents this in his nonviolent warfare and spirituality. Gandhi received ideological inspiration from Tolstoy, Ruskin, and Thoreau. These thinkers opposed the force of arms with the force of spirit. Gandhi risked his life without ever risking the life of his opponent by trusting symbolic force.
