Power of Gentleness

Anne Dufourmantelle

For philosophers, gentleness merges with civilization. The difficulty for the Ancient Greeks is to achieve gentleness without sacrificing values of courage, resolve, and an aptitude for war necessary within any political community. Fairness conveys that mixture of equity and gentleness. Derrida explains “for-give-ness.” Gentleness contains a double gift for both giver and receiver. Christian saints are figures of force and gentleness.
