The Watchdog Still Barks

This chapter presents the result of another content analysis, this one of two small local papers: Bradenton (Florida) Herald and the Lewiston (Idaho) Tribune. It suggests that although these papers take seriously their responsibility to police the work of government and industry, their size and strength do affect what they are able to achieve. These two newspapers—one small, and one very small—show that local papers are able to produce accountability reporting and even some deeply reported watchdog stories, despite their limited size. But the depth of the paper's resources seems to relate directly to the quantity and quality of their accountability output.
