Why am I interested in Google, and why is anyone interested in Google? For me, it all started with two anecdotes.

“Hello, I know who you are. I Googled you.” This is how one Internet-savvy stranger greeted me in his car one day as he was about to drive me to see friends we had in common. There are three “Barbara Cassins” I know of to date, including a lieutenant commander who is a spokesperson for the New Zealand navy and an American ophthalmologist. As Lacan explains in one of his major interventions from the early 1970s, “a language, among others, is nothing more than the integral of equivocations its history leaves in it.”...
