This essay describes and addresses the difficulty that Hispanism has in imagining its foundations and origination. It reads Cervantes’s novela ejemplar “El licenciado Vidriera” as an allegory of disciplinarity and disciplinarization, which the novela treats as a matter inextricable from the sense of touch. This Cervantic, early-modern account of the primal relation between discipline and touch, the essay suggests, anticipates and allows us to see unexpected consequences to Derrida’s quite radical approach to disciplinarity.

Keywords:   Cervantes, Derrida, disciplinarity
