In the third chapter, Nancy extends his critical exchange with Blanchot by discussing questions of exposure and abandonment in rethinking an “inoperative” community. The reference to abandonment is also situated in relation to writing, communication, or “the transmission of the untransmissable.” Nancy stresses that the “heart” or the “law” of community is the negativity of an abandonment or its “empty intimacy.”
