Beyond the Political

Beyond the Political

(p.8) 2 Beyond the Political
The Disavowed Community

Jean-Luc Nancy

Fordham University Press

In the second chapter, Nancy situates his early work on “the inoperative community” in relation to the condition of being exposed (which he draws from Heidegger’s thought of Dasein as ek-static or “outside-itself”). This would distinguish community from the sharing of a common essence or community understood as substance. Addressing the conflicts of interpretation and disagreements raised by Blanchot concerning Nancy’s work, emphasis is placed on the reception of Bataille, notably the political interpretations of Bataille’s writings. The political context in which Blanchot’s The Unavowable Community was written is also explored in relation to Blanchot’s relation to Bataille. The relation between community, politics, and the political is explored in terms of an “overcoming,” or a movement “beyond the political.”
