In 1847 the Jesuits established a second Jesuit college in the New York metropolitan area, the College of St. Francis Xavier in the heart of Manhattan. It quickly prospered, overshadowing St. John’s College as the premier Jesuit college in New York and developing into one of the largest Jesuit colleges in the United States and Canada. In 1912 it was combined with Fordham as part of a general consolidation of Jesuit colleges in the New York metropolitan area.
