This chapter is on writers considered to be “the first” African American and Asian American literature: Charles Chesnutt and Sui Sin Far. The chapters explore the “double-voiced” acts of signification both within the narratives themselves and in the presentation of the writers’ identity. The chapter introduces Walter Hines Page and William Hayes Ward as important overlooked figures in the publishing world at the turn of the century who played a key role in the enabling and shaping of the writers’ literary careers.
