The Negativity of Thinking Through Language

(p.241) 9 The Negativity of Thinking Through Language
Aesthetics of Negativity

William S. Allen

Fordham University Press

This last chapter summarises what has preceded by looking at Adorno’s development of a mode of dialectical thinking that can respond to the negativity of language, a mode that takes advantage of the rhetoric that language brings to thought, with all the instability that this entails for thought both as critique and as speculation. Such thinking not only allows for a thinking of aesthetics under these circumstances but also brings that experience to thought as material ambiguity, but this thinking and its speculative experience are dependent on the negativity in language brought out in works of literature.
