Schuck draws summary themes from the several perspectives taken in the book on democracy, culture, and Catholicism in Indonesia, Lithuania, Peru, and the United States. One is the observation that democracy is a response to the suffering of inequality. Another is that democracy is a personal and social ‘state of mind’ eroded by economic greed, institutional bureaucratization, and cultural forgetfulness. A final theme is the vital importance of Roman Catholic Church leaders having affective solidarity with those who suffer inequality. This will ensure that the gains of the Church in embracing democracy will be maintained—and extended into areas of Church organization and practice where it is sorely needed.
