Long before there was the European Union, Europe had always been conceived as an experiment, in terms of ethnicities, cultures, religions, and political systems that clashed all the time but also had to live together. Even today, Europe is always seen as something that is “not yet” and “will be” only when all conditions—whatever they are—are fulfilled. Europe is therefore an idea more than a reality. It is in fact logos, as a plurality of discourses and an answer always deferred to the Greek philosophical issue of the One in relation to the Many. Today’s Europeanism, however, remains deaf to the most urgent call of logos, namely, to the urgency to question relentlessly its own foundations, without trying to reach an impossible unity.
