In the Margins

(p.1) Introduction
Vladimir Jankélévitch

Aaron T. Looney

Fordham University Press

This chapter discusses the reasons for Jankélévitch's marginal role in post-war French philosophy. It highlights the congruence between his philosophical and linguistic style and the object of his investigation as well as the links between his ethics and aesthetics. It addresses Jankélévitch’s thinking in relation to his philosophy of time, accentuating its metaempirical and metalogical contours and its tension between the interval and the instant. Jankélévitch’s two writings on forgiveness—Pardonner? from 1971 and Le Pardon from 1967—revolve around the question whether there is an unforgivable. The Introduction navigates his distinctions between the moral and the psychological: Should one forgive? If so, under what, if any, conditions? What can one forgive? What may one forgive?
