This chapter describes the multilayered and often painful difficulties faced by the many gay priests in active ministry who are charged with representing and upholding church teaching on sexual diversity while often finding themselves consigned to a complex form of closetedness that is similar to the recently rescinded military policy of “don’t ask, don’t tell.” It shows how the “plight of gay clergy” influences current seminary training and priestly practice, with direct consequences for priests’ lives, for those whom they are called to serve, and for the spiritual and moral well-being of the church.
