This chapter describes the unsettling, wearying, and heart-rending mixture of belonging and marginalization, acknowledgment and invisibility that shapes this chapter’s author’s experiences as an active Catholic who is young, out, lesbian, and in a committed relationship. She reflects on the special harm and hurt that result when clergy (many of whom are themselves gay) and other Catholics, fearing exposure or shrinking from risks, fail to stand up for or fully stand with their LGBT brothers and sisters as they themselves face personal risk, exposure, and cost in the struggle for acceptance and participation in church and society.
