This chapter traces the 19th century encounter between Orthodoxy and nationalism in the Bulgarian lands. It points to the peculiarity of the Bulgarian case where the advent of nationalism preceded the establishment of a national church. In pursuit of national emancipation within the Ottoman Empire, Bulgarians ended up with ecclesiastical nationalism which aimed to preserve their ethno-religious identity by establishing a national Orthodox Church at the expense of splitting from the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The chapter reveals the main stages, features and actors of the ethno-philetism debate. It highlights Bulgarians' economic interests in establishing a national church and the crucial role played by the laity in the realization of this project.
