Azzione Cattolica in an American Setting
The Society of St. Charles–Scalabrinians and Catholic Action
Mary Elizabeth Brown examines the case of two Italian-American parishes in Washington DC and Boston served by the Society of St. Charles Scalabrinians from 1950 to 1970. In these ethnic communities, Catholic Action served less to promote lay empowerment and more as a means of preserving Italian culture in communities where Americanization had not been fully achieved before World War II. Brown’s analysis serves as a corrective to the notion that Catholic Action was invariably associated with lay challenges to existing Church structures.
