Speaking of Music: A View across Disciplines and a Lexicon of Topoi

These frequently concern the limits between language and music, or the ineffability of music, but conversely they can also extend into issues of physical embodiment or communal significance. But these topoi also see different types of development in different disciplinary contexts. This introductory chapter surveys the common threads that connect the various contributions to this book and indeed speaking of music generally.
