This chapter turns to the moment when, in the later nineteenth century, emergent democratic state capitalism encountered strong resistance from socialism and other collectivist political movements. It makes the case that the young E.M. Forster is not to be considered a “liberal” as Lionel Trilling for instance supposed, but as a mystical socialist. It offers a detailed reading of Howards End in support of this view, and proposes that the novel presents an image of a collective way of life that is under threat from the democratic-capitalist juggernaut.
