Conservatism and Critique

Conservatism and Critique

(p.37) Three Conservatism and Critique
Against Democracy

Simon During

Fordham University Press

This chapter argues that since democracy and capitalism have now become insurpassable, and since critique is no longer available to us as a strong form of thought, the history of conservatism offers possibilities for thinking against the times. Conservatism, it contends, is a resource for the left not just (perhaps even more than) for the right. In that spirit, it offers a revisionist and summary account of conservatism in relation to literary and cultural theory. It focuses largely on Karl Mannheim and Carl Schmitt's very significant 1920s work on conservatism and democracy.
