Painting Against Torture
Painting Against Torture
This chapter describes the circumstances surrounding the making of the two paintings from the series “Neo-Icons” that are included in the book, “Signing Statement Law or An Alternate Set of Procedures” (“America tortures”) and “Our Torture is Better than Their Torture.” During the headlong rush to war following the attacks of 9/11, millions of people both in America and across the world took to the streets in opposition to the reckless hubris of the U.S. president and his men. Some of the “Neo-Icons” record the language of those protests. However, when the paintings’ first exhibition in Santa Barbara in Fall 2006 was announced, after and despite years of news stories from Abu Ghraib to “Gitmo,” the art gallery endured weeks of threats and editorial attacks.
