This chapter discusses the relationship between contemplation and action in Berrigan’s work. In the work of peace-making, there is and must be a contemplative openness to the sacred, a porosity to the sacred, that grounds social activism. More primal than the conatus-essendi is the passio-essendi, we are first given to be before anything else. We are an original “Yes” to being and an activism grounded in this “Yes” tries, with finesse and reverence, to respect the integrity of creation and the human being and is animated by the hope of sanctification. We consecrate peace.
