The book is neither a specific medium nor a technology, though it of necessity delves in both. It arises at the interface, on the page or screen between ongoing pervasive inscriptive activity and public expression or display. In terms of the holding patterns of the book, they tend to hold back and take by force and they give easy access by reaching out to them. Now and seemingly forever, books have us in a quandary. In order for us rigorously to take it in, the book detains and isolates us to a degree for which we are never fully prepared. The prospects and format of the book are central to sequence of systems formats arising in the positivism and hardwiring. In addition, books are also interrelated with light-writing or photography.
