This chapter opens with the author and his brother learning that they will be separated from their family again in order to receive more adequate schooling, and the author finds himself saying his difficult goodbyes. En route, the author works aboard the hospital ship Oranje, where he must confront his hatred for his Japanese crewmates. The author details the numerous jobs he worked on the ship, including loading cargo, serving as a guard, and working in the mental health ward all before his arrival into port.
