In responding to Harry Berger's reading of the Bower of Bliss, the author combines homage to Harry with Harry-inspired insubordination as she shifts her primary attention away from the Bower of Bliss and questions Harry's identification of the gynephobia showcased by the episode as the fundamental drive animating the discourse of Book Two of The Faerie Queene. Looking at Book Two of The Faerie Queene through the prism of Christianity and religious history puts issues of gender ideology and the voluptuousness of the Bower of Bliss into a context quite different from the usual.
Keywords: Harry Berger, Bower of Bliss, gynephobia, The Faerie Queene, Christianity, religious history, gender ideology
