This chapter expounds on Herbert's personal life with Theresa and his children Clifford and Ella. Three other children were born to them, but did not survive. On May 6, 1893 the stock market collapsed, but the band played on. Victor Herbert became the new conductor of the Gilmore Band. He received rave reviews in New York City and on tour around the country establishing him as the American conductor.
