This chapter describes the difficulties Helmholtz encountered when communicating his findings concerning physiological time to the public. In the German context, the “Preliminary Report” about his measurements was met with considerable reluctance. Similar was the effect in the French context. The chapter argues that the main reasons for these problems were rooted in the dense description Helmholtz had offered of his innovative method. At the same time, it draws a parallel to the reluctant reception of Proust’s avant-garde novel, In Search of Lost Time.
