In the course of his time experiments, Helmholtz used the graphical method for illustrating the phenomenon of “lost time”. This chapter describes and investigates the curves that Helmholtz produced by means of his “myograph” in order to illustrate his previous findings. Successive contractions of a frog muscle were recorded on a rotating drum, while Helmholtz changed the point at which the corresponding nerve was stimulated. From the resulting gap between two recorded curves he deduced the time required by the nerve to transmit the stimulation to the nerve.
