The editors of this volume are indebted to numerous individuals who encouraged them to finish their work and move on to other things. The librarians at Fordham University and Saint Joseph's University deserve our deep appreciation for helping us in this project, as in so many others. The volume is dedicated to them for all that they have done for us and our students and for all that they will continue to do as they strive to make the historian's job a little easier than it otherwise would be. We also acknowledge and thank the librarians at Haverford College, the University of Pennsylvania, the Library Company of Philadelphia, and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, who smoothed the path of getting hold of the sources for revising essays, fact-checking, and tidying up, when necessary. We also are grateful to our institutions for their continued generous support. This volume is the fourth of our series of collections containing essays about the Civil War and Reconstruction published by Fordham University Press. We thank the Press's staff for encouraging the project and guiding it to completion, and we thank the leadership at the Press for recognizing the opportunities for discovering and publishing new scholarship on the Civil War and Reconstruction and making such concerns a major publishing interest. The editors also wish to thank Linda Patterson Miller and Elizabeth C. Vozzola for tolerating yet another of our joint projects and for being so gracious in accepting the bribes of dinners out as partial compensation for all the intrusions and interruptions our work has made on theirs.
