This chapter examines pragmatist John Dewey's religious belief. Dewey published his first book-length treatment of religion under the title A Common Faith when he was already 75 years old, but it should not be taken as his lack of interest on the subject. His religious influences were varied, having a conservative evangelical mother, a liberal evangelical father, and Universalist grandparents. From 1884 to 1894, Dewey also taught Bible classes at the University of Michigan and was an active member of the local church.
