This chapter discusses the historical stages of Jewish history based on the works of Jewish historians Isaak Markus Jost and Simon Dubnow. Jost's History of the Israelites, from the Time of the Maccabees to Our Own Times, According to the Original Sources, published between 1820 and 1828, covers the period from Frederick the Great's ascension to the throne to the end of foreign rule (1740–1815). Dubnow's World History of the Jewish People, from its Earliest Origins to the Present? emphasizes sociological and political process affecting the Jews but never failing to take full of Judaism's core content.
