By playing pragmatism and phenomenology off each other, this chapter proposes a way to bring both philosophies into a meaningful dialectic. Pragmatism’s anti-essentialism, foundationalism and instrumentalism is brought into sharper analytic use with phenomenological variational theory. The chapter concludes with a look at new imaging technologies that transcend human perceptual limits.
