How to Be an Intellectual

Jeffrey J. Williams

Fordham University Press

This chapter tells the story of "the theory journal," which arose in the decade from 1970-80. It surveys the history of literary journals, notably "the little magazine," and how they evolved to the theory journal. It also uncovers the material history of journals-the little magazine initially from benefactors, whereas the theory journal arose under the largesse of the American research university.
