This chapter examines the state of recent criticism. Taking as evidence a wave a anniversary editions, it points out that theory has entered a new stage. Rather than being shockingly radical, it has now become established practice. This arises in part from its conditions: the well-funded research university spurred its rise, but it is languishing because of current austerity.
