Freie and Behuniak detail the process that the political science department at LeMoyne College underwent to transform the departmental curriculum so that the departmental mission supported the Jesuit commitment to educate students about social justice issues by not simply informing them, but by encouraging them to act to transform themselves and their world. In the process of changing the departmental curriculum, the members of the department realized that they also would have to weigh if not actually confront a variety of factors: student culture, other academic departments, the college core, and the entire administrative organization. Transformative change, they discovered, implicates the very institution itself. The result of their efforts led the department to develop new, course content, pedagogies, requirements, and student programming that have noticeably moved away from disjointed individual endeavors toward a shared mission underpinned by Jesuit educational philosophy.
