Amidst the excitement that accompanied the translation into English of Chinese and Indian philosophical classics, the New England transcendentalists (especially Thoreau) were among the first authors in the Western philosophical tradition to have their work informed by a comparative study of philosophy East and West. This chapter develops an account of which Asian texts were most significant for the development of Thoreau's thought, and how he appropriated these influences and allowed them to inform his own philosophical voice.
