Chapter 3 opens with the author's family embarking on a trip to the Netherlands, where he chronicles a boat ride through Portugal, the Straight of Gibraltar, and several other places. The author also gives a short account of his daily life in this time, including the work of his father, the teachings of his mother, and the various activities he took part in. The chapter draws to a close with the family's departure shortly after Germany's invasion of the Netherlands and detaining of a beloved neighbour.
