In this chapter, the author recounts a malarial infection that plagued him for several days in the camp. He was briefly hospitalized and was one of few patients given quinine pills shortly before the supply ran out; afterwards, he was ordered to rest and refrain from working for a period of time. When he was eventually forced to return to work, he was given the job of preparing the dead in the camp, about which he recounts a gruesome tale of an old man whom he had briefly known. The author also includes an experience in which he met his mother after their separation, and how she managed to smuggle candies for her children. The chapter ends with the camp's brief observance of Christmas, which entailed a short service and a day off.
