Literacy is intricately embedded in a reading-oriented and information-sharing framework, which qualifies it as a crucial area of academic concern and knowledge management-focused action. The author of this book digs deep into the associations and implications of literacy and the practice as well as promotion of reading. He raises the argument that “[r]eading is only a way of avoiding the labor of serious thought. Reading enables us to cultivate the appearance of wisdom without doing the actual intellectual work on which true wisdom is founded. In reading, we permit another person to use our mind for thinking his or her thoughts.” In so doing, he challenges and aims to redefine critical and contemporary thinking against the backdrop of the tenet that reading (a) does not uphold independent thinking and (b) not only results from but also enables totalinarianism.
